Albertson’s headquarters in Minnesota has announced that they are closing down their Redmond store by mid-October. Store officials say no one will be laid off as long as they’re willing to accept positions elsewhere in the region.
The decision came suddenly for many, but some believed that having a Safeway and an Albertson’s within a half mile of each other didn’t make much sense. Safeway and Albertson’s are run by the same corporation. Safeway in Redmond recently underwent a very large renovation at it’s store just up Canal Boulevard from Albertson’s. Although the Albertson’s announcement said their lease was up at the Redmond store, the building itself is owned by Albertson’s holding company based in Minnesota.
A company spokesman said Albertson’s will continue to operate their stores in Bend at both the north and south ends of town.
